Bloody Pox not spreading on Insectoids

At first, I assumed that because I was instantly killing them, the Blood Pox wasn't spreading. So I tried hitting a larger insectoid with it, and it didn't spread. This has consistently been the result with spiders, the bees in Act 2, and some of the others throughout Act 1.

If it was just not spreading because I instantly killed them, I'd understand. But it's also not spreading when I don't instantly kill them.
